2026 is shaping up to be the most consequential year in Pokémon TCG since the 2020 boom. The Scarlet & Violet era wrapped up in 2025, and the game has entered a brand-new chapter: the Mega Evolution era. With multiple sets already released and the imminent launch of Chaos Rising on 22 May 2026, collectors need to understand what is coming and why it matters for their collections and investment portfolios.
Why 2026 Matters: Mega Evolution and the 30th Anniversary Year
The Mega Evolution era brings back one of the most beloved mechanics in Pokémon history — Mega Evolution, first introduced in the X&Y era (2013–2016). For longtime collectors, this is an emotional hook that drives pull demand well beyond the competitive scene. Nostalgia is one of the most powerful value drivers in the TCG market, and Mega Evolution's return is already generating significant pre-release buzz among collectors who opened Base Set Charizard packs as children and are now adults with disposable income.
Layered on top of this, 2026 is Pokémon's 30th Anniversary year. The franchise turns 30 in February 2026, and The Pokémon Company is deploying a full anniversary campaign including the first-ever worldwide simultaneous set release — more on that below. Any year with both a new era launch and a major anniversary milestone is historically strong for sealed product values. The parallel with 2016 (XY Evolutions, Pokémon's 20th anniversary) is hard to ignore — that year produced some of the most valuable modern collectibles in the TCG.

H1 2026 Sets Recap
Three Mega Evolution era sets have already launched before May 2026:
- Mega Evolution — Ascended Heroes (30 January 2026) — the era-opening set, featuring Mega Venusaur ex, Mega Charizard ex, and Mega Blastoise ex. Introduced the new "Mega ex" card mechanic. Pull rates for Illustration Rares have been strong, with early PSA 10 copies commanding premiums. Sealed booster boxes have held above MSRP in secondary market pricing.
- Phantasmal Flames — the second Mega Evolution era set. Ghost-type and Fire-type themed, featuring Mega Gengar ex and Mega Charizard Y ex. More focused on competitive play than the era-opener, with tournament staple Trainer cards driving secondary market prices.
- Destined Rivals — the third set, introducing rival-themed storylines across the Pokémon franchise's history. Trainer cards are the standout chase hits in this set, with full-art Trainer Illustration Rares already showing strong secondary market prices.
Chaos Rising: Launching 22 May 2026
The most immediately relevant set for Singapore collectors right now is Chaos Rising, launching on 22 May 2026 — less than two weeks from today. Key details:
- Theme: Chaos Rising centres on Mega Mewtwo ex and the expanded Psychic-type roster. Mewtwo is consistently the highest-value Pokémon across all eras for graded cards — a Mega Mewtwo ex Special Illustration Rare in this set has enormous ceiling potential.
- New Rarity: The "Prismatic Rare" rarity debuted in Phantasmal Flames but reaches its full expression in Chaos Rising, with approximately 6 Prismatic Rare slots per set carrying eye-catching prismatic foil treatment that makes these cards immediately visually distinct.
- Investment outlook: Pre-release demand for Chaos Rising is the highest of any Mega Evolution era set so far. If Mewtwo pulls match their Scarlet & Violet equivalents in population ceiling, PSA 10 Mega Mewtwo ex SIR could be the set's signature card for years to come.
Singapore collectors who plan to attend a pre-release event should register early with their local game stores — spots for Chaos Rising pre-release kits are limited, and demand is tracking well above normal. H2 2026 Outlook: Black Bolt and the 30th Celebration
Looking further ahead into the second half of 2026:
- Black Bolt — confirmed for later 2026. Details remain limited, but leaks suggest a Dark-type and Electric-type theme featuring Mega Luxray ex and Mega Absol ex. Given how well-received Luxray has been historically (Luxray GL Lv.X is one of the most sought-after older cards among Singapore collectors), this set will have a passionate following among veteran collectors.
- 30th Celebration — officially revealed 1 June 2026, launching 16 September 2026 worldwide simultaneously. This is the first-ever global simultaneous Pokémon TCG release and marks the franchise's 30th anniversary. It introduces the new Futuristic Rare rarity. The simultaneous worldwide launch eliminates the Japanese import premium and levels the playing field for Singapore collectors — everyone gets access at the same time, with no advantage for those who source from Japan weeks early.
Chase Card Candidates for 2026
Based on historical patterns and current market signals, the highest-ceiling chase candidates across 2026's Mega Evolution era are:
- Mega Mewtwo ex Special Illustration Rare (Chaos Rising)
- 30th Celebration Futuristic Rares featuring Pikachu and Eevee
- Mega Charizard ex Full Art variants (Ascended Heroes, confirmed low pull rate)
- Trainer SIRs in Destined Rivals featuring iconic characters from across Pokémon generations
- Any Prismatic Rare in Chaos Rising featuring a fan-favourite Psychic-type Pokémon
Will Pokémon Overprint?
The overprinting concern is perennial and justified. The Pokémon Company over-corrected after the 2021 shortage, flooding the market with Scarlet & Violet products that caused sealed box prices to collapse well below MSRP for many sets. However, anniversary products have historically been treated with more restraint — Celebrations (2021) was in shortage for months, and the 2016 anniversary set Evolutions became a collector staple.
If the same strategy applies to 30th Celebration, early sealed allocation will be the scarcest it has been in years. Standard Mega Evolution era sets may still be over-printed, but the anniversary product should be positioned differently. Singapore collectors should pre-order sealed product for Chaos Rising and the 30th Celebration through trusted local stores rather than waiting for street date availability. Monitor TCG.SG listings closer to the launch dates for pre-order and launch-day availability from registered local sellers.
